Přerov Castle

A Renaissance castle with a cylindrical tower, it was originally a medieval castle. Built on the Travertine hill above the Bečva river, today it is a part of the Upper Town. Over the centuries it has been owned by several prominent Moravian noble families and has undergone numerous style transformations. The original wooden castle, later a Gothic palace with a cylindrical tower, was built in the second half of the 16th century and partially rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau by the Lords of Pernstein. The municipal coat of arms with its two towers and bull's head also originated in this period. The Renaissance chateau as we know it today is the result of a reconstruction by Charles the Elder of Žerotín around 1612. Today the building houses the Museum of J. A. Comenius, founded in 1888, which is one of the oldest museums of its kind. Further information
